Floating in God’s own country

28 October 2008 8:38 pm, Theo, Tales from India,

As I’m writing this it sounds like I writing from the middle of a war zone. It is Diwali over here and boy is it bright and loud! But we’ll leave that to another blog.

We have guests:

My parents are visiting India and we are touring and exploring India with them.

Kochi

Our first stop – Kerala. Also called “God’s own country”. And it is a beautiful, green, tropical paradise.

We first stopped at Kochi (or Cochin), but because of a delayed flight and rainy weather we did not get the opportunity to see all of Kochi that we planned. We did however manage a short sunset cruise to explore the magical Malabar coast line.

Afloat

The next morning we departed for Alleppey to spend the next day on a house boat. I made all the travel arrangements and was a bit nervous as to what we would find. I was emailed some pictures, but often in India the reality does not quite match up to the brochure.

We were delighted when we reached our boat (called Platinum!) and discovered a luxurious, comfortable “dreamboat”.

The boat had a very comfortable deck with a dining room table, lcd tv and deck chairs for sight seeing, 2 bedrooms with large beds and each with a bathroom. Other than that there was a small kitchen and it came equipped with a staff compliment of 3 (captain, engine master and chef) that catered for all our desires.

We spent the rest of the day and the night in the oasis of the backwaters of Kerala and enjoyed the sights, the water and especially life that goes on next to the water.

Here are some of my favourite snaps of life in the backwaters:

It was really a beautiful and peaceful experience. We were surprised by the large number of houseboats that were patrolling the backwaters, but it still was a private experience that allowed us to get a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals that reside on water’s edge.

And we were even entertained at times by the wildlife as well:

Not only did we cruise in style, we also dined like royalty:

We can highly recommend this experience, and we are very happy with the travel agent that made all the arrangements. Please contact me if you would like to get more information.

As normal there are tons of photos on the website.

And another glimpse at the magical back waters:
